An interview with the animal volunteer Nataliia Mikitina

Animal shelter, Motovylivka village, Fastiv district

This shelter was organized by animal volunteer Natalia Mykytina, an IDP from Luhansk. After the displacement, Natalia could not find a shelter that would accept her and her dog. She found a place to live in Motovylivka and started taking temporary care of dogs from soldiers going to war.

Later, she was approached by villagers who were leaving and gave their animals to her for temporary care. Since many of the owners did not return for their animals, the shelter still exists.

There are about 36 cats (including 16 kittens) and 45 dogs now.

Natalia Mykytyna and her 12-year-old son care for the shelter's animals. Currently, dogs are brought here from different parts of the country: Borodyanka, Gostomel, Irpin, Bakhmut, Kharkiv, and Luhansk.

Monthly animals need:
- 300 kg of dried food for dogs;
- 24 kg dried foods for cats;
- 930 packs (100g each) of soft food for kittens;

Also, for dogs and cats that don't have teeth, canned food is needed constantly: 7,44 kg per day (1 can - 1,240kg)

Apart from that, there is a need to treat, cure and prevent animals:
- Deworming of dogs in case of infection caused by Angiostrongylus vasorum;
- Anthelmintic treatment of cats;
- Treatment of animals against fleas and ticks;
- Treatment and prevention of aphanipterosis;
- Complex therapy of allergic dermatitis, acaroses, demodicosis, sarcoptic mange, and otodectosis;
- Reducing the risk of babesiosis;
- Sterilization of new dogs that come to the shelter.

Currently, there is a need to equip new enclosures for animals:
4-5 dogs live in small cages.
It is necessary to prepare the cages for the winter season.

We have already done it on our own:
- We bought materials for conducting light to the existing cages;
- Materials were purchased for the arrangement of the floor in the cages (half of the cages do not have it, so the animals have to live and eat on the ground).
